The art of shadows

Kumi Yamashita is a Japanese artist who creates amazing artworks based on shadow rather than light. Like a painter who tries to convey an image with the fewest number of brushstrokes, Yamashita uses slim pieces of wood, square paper or aluminum numbers and letters to create his stunning works.

Sellotape Dance

John Rijpma, a Dutch artist has made something beautiful from sellotape – he calls it “Tape Generations” and it took him 6 months and a lot of hours to create. Blank Mag thinks it is brilliant.

Johan Rijpma (1984) studied at the Utrecht School of the Arts (Faculty of Art, Media and Technology) in Hilversum. By making short films, music videos and animations, he studies his unpredictable environment.

Zevs – Urban Artist

In Blank Mag’s series on urban art today we salute the work of French street artist Zevs who is infamous for his Visual Kidnapping and Liquidated Logos work.

In his Liquidated Logos work he drips paint from logos, giving them an appearance of dissolving.

“Of course, there is a graffiti aesthetic to my art but I primarily play with the visual effect. I use the original colours and re-paint the logo with excess. By pouring paint over them, the logo dissolves in front of the viewer’s eyes, drawing attention to, and visually disturbing the recognisable and omnipresent trademark. By doing so, I try to investigate the logo’s visual power. It’s a simple gesture” says Zevs.

In 2002 he cut out a model of a gigantic Lavazza-poster in Berlin. Above the hole in the poster he wrote: “VISUAL KIDNAPPING – PAY NOW!”

This intervention not only struck a chord with art lovers and people in Berlin. It has also inspired political activists. Stealing an image from a poster in Germany is now spoken of in the media as a visual kidnapping.

“Visual kidnapping is like entering an interactive game: If the brand on the billboard kidnaps the attention of the public with the purpose of consumer demand, I reverse the situation and I kidnap the model on the poster and I demand a ransom” he says.
